CareSource Bayou Health hosted a Halftime Party at Fletcher Elementary in Beaumont and Garrett Elementary School in Houston to celebrate the start of the spring semester and equip students and staff with the resources needed to finish the year strong. Every student received a clear backpack full of fresh school supplies, gift cards and other prizes.

“When the community can show that they care and can help make learning fun, it encourages kids to have better attendance,” said Angie Carey, senior director of community-based partnerships for CareSource. “CareSource Bayou Health provided school supplies alongside the fun to empower students to have a positive attitude towards learning, grow their relationships with fellow students and improve their self-esteem.”

Education and literacy are important drivers of health outcomes. Studies have also shown inadequate literacy skills can lead to health problems in adulthood because these patients often have a difficult time navigating what can be a complicated health system. Patients with lower reading skills tend to have less health-related knowledge, receive less preventative care, have poorer control over chronic illness and are hospitalized more frequently.

“Being an educator means nothing without forming partnership within the communities of the students you serve,” said Tacarra Williams, principal at Garrett Elementary. “Service is the one gift that I remind my staff of daily! I believe in impacting the life of the whole child. Thank you to CareSource Bayou Health, for being willing to partner with us on this continued mission. “

The team also partnered with the Houston Foodbank, Inspire Church and Houston Responds to provide much needed groceries as well as personal and household items.
