They came by car, van, bicycle, motorcycle and even on foot on a beautiful early fall morning.

On Wednesday, October 4, CareSource, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action (HAPCAP) and OhioHealth partnered together to host their 3rd annual women’s health drive-thru event called Brake for Breakfast in the parking lot of the Athens City Pool on East State Street. The organizations provided more than 200 participating individuals with preventative information and care. Fifteen mammograms were performed during the three-hour event.

“CareSource was proud to partner with Ohio Health and HAPCAP to bring Brake for Breakfast to Athens for the third straight year,” said Dee Yocum, Vice President, Ohio Market Operations.  “Having regular mammograms is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your own breast-cancer-related risks.  Our goal is to remove the barriers of scheduling and transportation to community members."

Participants received a free to-go breakfast as well as a resource bag with information on women’s health screenings. OhioHealth’s Mobile Mammography provided the mammograms. Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine had its mobile clinic set up for on-site health screenings.

“We know that not everyone who may benefit from a mammogram or other preventive care gets these services annually,” said Alicia Miklos, director of the SE Ohio Foodbank, a HAPCAP program. “We’re proud to work with CareSource and OhioHealth each year to connect our community to the services they need to live healthier lives.”

The event was received so well by community members that next year’s Brake for Breakfast has already been scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

“Our goal is to make getting help accessible and convenient for everyone in our community to prioritize their health,” said LeeAnn Lucas-Helber, president of OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital. “We were excited to join hands with our community partners to ensure that preventative health care becomes a regular part of every woman's routine.”
