Marian University and CareSource Indiana team up to address rural health care crisis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (CARESOURCE) – Marian University and CareSource Indiana have joined forces to continue their work tackling Indiana's rural health care challenges head-on. At an event held at Marian University's Michael A. Evans Center Lobby, the partners announced a significant step forward: a $250,000 donation from CareSource to establish the CareSource Rural Health Endowed Scholarship.

The pressing need for improved health care in rural areas cannot be understated. HRSA.gov reports that nearly 60% of Indiana's 92 counties face shortages of primary health care providers, leaving residents grappling with limited access to medical services and long distances to travel for health care.

With the donation from CareSource, Marian University is poised to make a significant impact on rural health care across the state. The CareSource Rural Health Endowed Scholarship will provide financial support to medical students committed to serving in rural Indiana towns, reducing barriers to pursuing careers in rural medicine. The first scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 2024.

Steve Smitherman, president of CareSource Indiana, emphasized the importance of the partnership in addressing the critical health care needs of Indiana's rural communities. He expressed pride in the collaboration and underscored CareSource's commitment to improving health care access for all Hoosiers.

The Indiana Rural Health Association (IRHA) also praised the partnership, emphasizing the importance of collaborations that enhance rural health care delivery. Cara Veale, CEO of IRHA, expressed excitement about the partnership's potential to bolster the health care infrastructure in rural Indiana.
