CareSource, a nationally recognized managed care provider, partnered with Walmart to organize Walmart Caregiver Days—a heartfelt initiative designed to offer respite, education, and resources to caregivers. The event, which took place on Aug. 19-20, aimed to recognize and assist the unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for loved ones in need.

Caregiving is a vital yet often overlooked role that impacts millions of individuals across the nation. In recognition of this, workshops, expert-led discussions, and interactive sessions covering various topics, such as stress management and accessing local support networks, were key features of the event. Caregivers attending had the opportunity to connect with one another, share personal experiences and learn from one another.

One workshop featured Teresa Hottle, Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Director at CareSource. She shared her heartfelt journey as a caregiver to her husband, offering valuable insights—both personal and professional. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in this empowering conversation and more by sharing their personal caregiving journeys. It offered an emotional time of self-reflection and underscored the pivotal role they play and the significance of their caregiving efforts. The workshop provided a safe space for attendees to exchange experiences, connect with others who understand their challenges, and gain a renewed sense of purpose and strength.

The highlight of the event was a collaboration with Walkin’ and Rollin’ Costumes to create a custom-made wheelchair costume for 6-year-old McKenna Recker. This unique costume was requested by McKenna’s father before he was deployed. Unfortunately, his passing in 2020 did not allow him to see it come to fruition. Mckenna was surprised with her Minnie Mouse Bowtique costume that came with flashing lights, her favorite colors and photos of her father.

Melissa, McKenna's mother and primary caregiver, has stood as a pillar of strength in McKenna's life and has openly shared her caregiving journey. As a single mother of four with a full-time job, Melissa's story is on of the selfless resilience and love.

The collaboration between CareSource and Walmart in orchestrating Walmart Caregiver Days reverberated powerfully. It celebrated caregivers' tireless contributions while equipping them with practical tools to navigate their roles effectively. The event served as a reminder of the pivotal role caregivers play in the community. This partnership reflected CareSource's strong commitment to improving the lives of caregivers and acknowledging the invaluable support they offer.
