Community-driven initiative gathered 10 local partners to support mothers and families for a two-day event Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1.

HOUSTON (Oct. 5, 2023) – With thousands of mothers across Texas struggling to access crucial maternal care to support them through pregnancy and motherhood, CareSource Bayou Health, a joint venture between Legacy Community Health and nonprofit managed care organization CareSource, partnered with Walmart and other local organizations for “Walmart Baby Days” Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1 to empower new and expecting mothers and families in underserved communities.

Walmart Baby Days served more than 200 Houston mothers and newborn families to provide an abundance of valuable resources, educational materials and access to expert guidance. The event saw an outpour of unwavering community support, with a family of seven gifted car seats to travel safely home, a pregnant mother given diapers and supplies, hundreds of books and baby samples donated and more.

“We are thrilled to have partnered with CareSource Bayou Health to bring Walmart Baby Days to Houstonians in need,” said Monica Simmonds, Director of Social Determinants of Health Implementation Programs at Walmart. “From strollers and car seats to nursery furniture, Walmart is proud to be a dependable resource for the city and extend access to vital supplies to support local mothers and newborn families.”

The local event gathered nearly a dozen community-based partners to supply vital maternal health and family resources, all united in their commitment to implement effective care and improve the lifelong health of women and families. Highlights include:

  • The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship organized an interactive story time reading nook for kids, conducted demonstrations and provided tips on child sleep safety, including recommendations regarding cribs, bassinets or pack-and-plays. The organization also shared general ways for families to create a safe sleeping environment and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • The Women’s Resource of Greater Houston hosted a financial planning workshop to help guide new and expecting families on their financial journey, discussing important topics such as budgeting.
  • Spring Branch Community Health Center administered health screenings, including HIV testing and prenatal services.
  • Safe Kids Worldwide held an educational series on safe sleep, car seat safety and safe storage plans to protect children from accessing dangerous items at home.
  • Communities in Schools shared information around infant support, health and human services, college and career readiness and family engagement.
  • March of Dimes Greater Houston led discussions on family health, focusing on tips for child health, the importance of doctor appointments and how to ease the experience for youth, maternal health and their mental health hotline.

“CareSource Bayou Health is committed to driving better quality health outcomes for Texans in the Harris and Jefferson service areas,” said Jason Neerman, Vice President of Business Development at CareSource Bayou Health. “We are profoundly grateful for Walmart’s partnership, allowing us to put our mission into action, working directly in the community to provide essential resources and serve those who need it most. Walmart Baby Days was an outstanding success, and we look forward to expanding our reach and impact in the future.”
