Health care nonprofit highlights re-entry program and celebrates success stories

INDIANAPOLIS (CareSource) – Today, nonprofit managed care entity CareSource and Indianapolis Colts teamed up to tackle one of Indiana’s toughest challenges: successful re-entry after incarceration.

“Game Plan for Success,” hosted at the Colts Gridiron Hall, spotlighted the power of second chances for formerly incarcerated Hoosiers. Colts Hall of Famer Bill Brooks headlined the event, sharing life lessons from both the playing field and beyond.

Governor Mike Braun, who has supported re-entry programs as a way to reduce recidivism and improve Indiana communities, provided a video message supporting the event and the CareSource Re-EntryTM and CareSource JobConnect® programs. Indiana Department of Corrections Commissioner Lloyd Arnold attended the Game Plan for Success event.

“Nearly one-third of individuals released from prison in Indiana return within three years,” said Dr. Cameual Wright, president of CareSource Indiana. “The CareSource Re-Entry Program is working to change that trend by helping individuals rebuild their lives through health care access, mental health support and career pathways. We want to thank the Indianapolis Colts for teaming up with CareSource to help these individuals improve their lives and strengthen our communities.”

“Preparing for a successful reentry is a critical part of IDOC’s mission and we are so thankful for our partners, such as CareSource,” said Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Lloyd Arnold. “The supports our partners provide help those leaving DOC facilities have a successful reentry, finding housing, work and resources and contributing to Hoosier communities.”

In addition to raising awareness, CareSource recognized individuals and community organizations championing re-entry initiatives. Award recipients included:

  • JaMarcus Fields – Founder of Iron Sharpens Iron
  • Maranda Williams – Indiana State Organizer at REFORM Alliance
  • Larry King – Re-entry Coordinator at HIRE

In CareSource’s Re-Entry program, liaisons meet with individuals prior to their release, establish relationships, and maintain contact for up to 90 days post-release. They assist participants with health screenings, facilitate connections to doctors and link them to JobConnect and behavioral health services. Data indicates that 73% of engaged members had a preventive health visit in 2024, more than twice the rate of non-engaged members. Additionally, engaged members averaged twice as many behavioral health visits and completed more JobConnect activities.

But the story of this program’s impact is best told through its effect on members’ lives. Sam’s story of resilience and creating a new life with help from CareSource was told at the event with this powerful video
