CareSource partners with iCan Health Inc. to boost diabetes awareness

(DAYTON, OH – March 6, 2023) – CareSource, a nationally recognized nonprofit health plan, announced today that it has partnered with iCan Health Inc., providing the organization with $199,000 to further boost efforts to build awareness of living a healthy life with diabetes. Through this funding, more than 6,500 people within the greater Cincinnati and Dayton regions will gain access to iCan Health’s “iCan Manual: My Simple Manual for Living with Diabetes.”

The iCan Manual will assist with daily self-management taking a holistic approach that provides body, mind and spirit guidance for navigating diabetes. The manuals will be culturally competent and available in Spanish, Somali and Arabic, which are the top four languages of CareSource members with diabetes.

“Partnering with CareSource will increase access to quality diabetes material, potentially improving the overall health outcomes related to diabetes within the greater Cincinnati area,” said Deasa Dorsey, RN, BSN, founder and president of iCan Health Inc. “Our manual is not your traditional diabetes manual as it takes a holistic and well-rounded approach to living life with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Through these initiatives and this new partnership, I believe we will reach the individuals that need and want to learn more about managing their diagnosis.”

The American Diabetes Association reports that diabetes affects 37.3 million or 11.3% of Americans. CareSource is dedicated to sharing digestible, worthwhile information about these chronic health conditions to reduce complications and further support those at higher risk. Based on findings gathered from current efforts in cities such as Dayton and Cincinnati, this partnership has the potential to scale throughout the whole state of Ohio.

“As a managed care organization, we see firsthand the negative effects that unmanaged or improperly managed diabetes has on both the diagnosed individual and the individuals surrounding them,” said Steve Ringel, market president of CareSource Ohio. “In order to initiate positive engagement, we first must focus on greater education of diabetes itself, ensuring that we are reaching people despite language barriers or cultural differences. We are proud to partner with iCan Health to reinvest into the lives of our members as well as those living in the greater Dayton and Cincinnati areas.”
