$25,000 donation grows home-delivered meals through Forgotten Harvest’s Healthy Food, Healthy Communities initiative

TROY, Mich. (July 2, 2025) — HAP CareSource is continuing its commitment to community health through a $25,000 investment in Forgotten Harvest’s Healthy Food, Healthy Communities initiative. The support helps provide fresh, nutritious food to vulnerable seniors and residents across metro Detroit. The program delivers meals directly to households, helping meet critical needs for those facing challenges to transportation and access to food.

While the initiative addresses food insecurity among adults 21 and older, this program places a special focus on seniors facing barriers to transportation. Through strategic partnerships with DoorDash and Amazon Community Flex, the program delivers to nearly 2,000 households each month—more than 95 percent of which are seniors. A recent expansion to the program added a hub-and-spoke delivery model in Macomb County, reaching an additional 100 households monthly.

Last year alone, Forgotten Harvest served more than 345,000 seniors across Southeast Michigan. The Healthy Food, Healthy Communities initiative reached its delivery limit under previous funding, making HAP CareSource’s investment critical to meeting growing demand.

“Seniors make up the majority of those we are reaching through this effort, and their health and independence depend on access to fresh food,” said Charles Tischer, director of community outreach at HAP CareSource. “This partnership with Forgotten Harvest allows us to remove barriers like transportation and cost and invest in the long-term well-being of the communities we serve.”

The funding supports key operational costs, including delivery fees, transportation, food supplies and staffing. HAP CareSource employees also contribute time by volunteering to pack meal boxes and supporting Forgotten Harvest fundraising events, helping advance local hunger relief efforts.

Forgotten Harvest rescues more than 40 million pounds of food annually and distributes it through a network of more than 200 pantries, shelters and soup kitchens across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
