HAP CareSource supports Rx Kids, an innovative program assisting moms and babies with prenatal and neonatal care

FLINT Mich. (CARESOURCE) - HAP CareSource, a joint venture announced last year between HAP, a Michigan-based nonprofit health plan and CareSource, a nationally recognized managed care organization, donated $50,000 to Rx Kids. The gift supports Rx Kids’ mission to support expectant mothers and newborns in Flint with direct financial assistance to provide access to critical prenatal and neonatal care.

Rx Kids is the first-ever citywide cash prescription program for expectant moms and babies. Rx Kids provides all pregnant moms, who reside in the city of Flint, with no-strings-attached cash of $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 each month throughout a baby’s first year. Research shows that unconditional cash transfers can be life-changing for mothers and babies and is shown to have sustained health and development impacts years after cash is delivered. Healthier pregnancies and postnatal care have positive impacts on birth weight, premature births, breastfeeding, parental mental health and food security. Other benefits include improved early cognitive development, overall health, educational attainment, nutrition, future earnings and a reduction in anxiety and depression.

“We are extremely grateful for the support from HAP CareSource” said Rx Kids director, pediatrician and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine associate dean for public health Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha. “We applaud their recognition of the importance of this program in ensuring a great start for kids in Flint, which pays long-term dividends throughout their entire lives.”

On Feb. 14, HAP CareSource also participated in the “Rx Kids Launch Bash”, a free day of activities to celebrate Valentine’s Day and the launch of Rx Kids at the Flint Children’s Museum. This family friendly, and free event featured crafts, free books, activities for kids and more than a dozen community resource tables for Flint families.

“HAP CareSource knows the importance of partnering with local organizations who are already doing great work for Michiganders,” said Chip Tischer, director, community marketing at HAP CareSource. “We are proud to support Rx Kids as they work to improve the health outcomes for families, remove barriers to care, and enable kids in Flint to flourish.”

HAP CareSource is a joint venture between Health Alliance Plan (HAP) a Michigan-based, nonprofit health plan that provides health coverage to individuals and companies of all sizes, and CareSource, a nationally recognized managed care organization with over 2.3 million members.
